Getting the right balance
Well, it’s finally spring – it’s still light at 6.0 o’clock (evening – don’t ask me about the morning) and the weather is getting warmer; and it’s stopped raining. Shirley and I have been busy in the garden pruning and planting and very enjoyable and satisfying it is too. Last month we were on holiday visiting family and we have just had another short weekend away. So we have been doing things we enjoy, as well as being involved in the parish and wider community (while we are still able!). Good.
Meanwhile, in our parish lent course this week we considered how we, as Christians, talk to people, and how we can start conversations. But, above all, we discussed how we can make sure that people understand that we are Christians and what this means to us: that it is the most important thing in our lives and that we try to demonstrate our faith by our words and actions.
For some people this is straightforward. They can seamlessly integrate their “Christian lives” with their ordinary, day-to-day, lives and doing the things they want to, whether it’s sport, like cricket or football, or a favourite hobby.
For others, getting a balance that they are comfortable with between “Christian” and “ordinary” lives may not be so easy. While for some – those with young families, those who act as carers, those who work long and sometimes unsocial hours, it may hardly be a relevant question at all. But, during lent, we can perhaps think about how we spend our time and getting the balance right for us.
