A Sense of Frustration
A small group of us meet in Bart’s on Friday afternoons to play Scrabble, (care to join us?) and it quite often happens that someone comes in to the Centre, about 4.30, just after the Office and Coffee Bar have closed and our own thoughts are turning towards the weekend, with a sob story and requests/demands help.
So, last Friday, two Muslim men brought in a dishevelled-looking, somewhat incoherent, carrier-bag clutching, late middle-aged white man who, apparently, had been discharged from hospital with no-where to go. We needed to help. We did put the kettle back on and give him tea. Now, his story is not wholly believable: he could not have been discharged without having somewhere to go. It seems the Muslim men met him, took pity on him, took him to an address he did have on him, but where they denied knowledge of him, and then they spent the afternoon trying to get help from local Churches.
Our frustration is that there was nothing we could do. There are no night-shelters, the Council may have emergency Social Services, but for families and the young – not for single adults who are, in an absolute sense, responsible for their actions. It was embarrassing for us, as Christians, to have to turn away someone in some need who was brought in by two “Good Samaritans” of a different faith and who, understandably, took a rather dim view of it all. Not a good witness.
All we could do was send them to the Franciscans at the Helping Hands Friary on Balaam St. and hope they could help him. What “Jesus would have done” I don’t know, but what we can do I don’t know either.

Pilgrimage to Bradwell
Pauline Ellis from St Paul's and myself are eager to experience the Bradwell Pilgrimage again this year. Saturday 12th July. http://bradwellpilgrimage.webs.com/ In the distant past, a couple of coaches went from Newham every year and joined up with hundreds of others from various denominations across Essex and East London. We thought we'd experiment this year by trying to fill a coach from the churches in East Ham.It seems the likely cost will be around £10. Please let me know if you are interested or want more info. And watch out for more publicity at St Bart’s. Shirley Biro
