Advent 2, 2013
There seems to be so very much to do to get ready for Christmas!
My many ‘hag-mags’ tell me that I should decorate our house in red plaid or grey and silver leather – or possibly even with logs and twigs collected from the seashore! They also say I should buy a turducken. (a chicken, stuffed inside a duck, stuffed inside a turkey
– I’m sure there’s an ancient Jewish hygiene law against that!)
And handmade crackers at £10 each are the way to go, apparently, together with a smart new outfit for each event from now til Candlemas – perhaps a onesie would be nice?? (perhaps not!)
Actually, I’m going to get out the multi-coloured decorations we’ve had for ever, buy enough food to feed an army for months
– but nothing stuffed – and, if I can find them, some crackers I bought in the sales last January will do fine – but a new dress…well, maybe!
Advent reminds us that when God chose to become human, it was in an animals’ feed trough that the God - baby was laid, in the shed at the back of an inn; nothing glitzy or particularly fragrant about that!
And Advent is the time to look again for God’s coming in the most unexpected places and situations. Look at those brave people in Glasgow, frequently subjects of cruel jokes about their intelligence; they didn’t run away from the carnage caused when a helicopter fell onto a pub, they ran towards it, to do what they could to help.
Surely God was in that place just as the baby was in Bethlehem.
