St Mary Magdalene † St Bartholomew † St Alban

In the midst of life…
This week we have been confronted with images of death, particularly Margaret Thatcher’s funeral and the events in Boston.
The funeral was just the sort of thing we do so well: the dignity, the ceremony, the Dimbleby - makes one proud to be British. More importantly, the Gospel was preached; by the Bishop in his address stressing the Christian message of redemption and in the lessons, read by professing Christians. Millions have heard it, though how many would take it in I’m not sure. There was a certain remoteness about it all. The participants were, how can I put it, nearly all “of a certain age”. But then they would be, and should be, because Lady Thatcher died at 87, after a very full life, and was not like us, which is the whole point. The service was very moving and poignant but the event wasn’t really sad and certainly not tragic.
Boston is altogether different. Young people, ordinary people, people much like us, caught up in something entirely unrelated to them. The haunting photograph of Martin, the 8 year-old boy with the sign
“no more hurting people”. Not for him, or the others, a long and very full life. We can identify with that. It could be us and our own families.
It was easy for us to have seen God in the Cathedral, much harder to see Him in Boston (or, for that matter, in Texas). Our Christian hope is that He was there just as much as He was proclaimed in St. Paul’s. Martin’s father asked for our prayers. He certainly deserves them.

Anointing and Laying on of hands for healing at Bart's today
Anyone who would like to be anointed with the oil of healing after the service at Bart's this morning should adjourn to the Chapel after the main service where the clergy and others will be present to pray with/and for you and to offer this incredibly beautiful ministry. If you are feeling down, unwell, facing a hospital appointment or just wanting God's healing power - do stay behind for this healing ministry. We all need healing!
REMINDER St Bart’s DCC is tomorrow at 7.30pm in the Chapel.
Book Club We had a very good first meeting of the Parish Book Club on Monday. Thanks to all those who turned up. We enjoyed the three Philip Larkin poems so much that we decided to reflect on another selection of his poetry to get to know him better when we meet next month. Please note that meeting is Monday 20 May at 2pm.
Website The copy on the old parish website has been migrated to a new design template. www.easthamparish.org.uk so do take a look at it. All of the copy is from the previous site so the task now is to make the information as up to date as possible.
Gospel of Mark course Not too late to join the day reflecting on St Mark's Gospel - tomorrow at St Bart’s. We begin at 1030am and will end with Evening Prayer at 3.30pm. ALL WELCOME. Cost is just £5 including lunch and refreshments.
Coming Soon ASCENSION DAY Thursday 9th May 7pm
We are delighted to announce that The Right Revd Graeme Knowles, formerly Dean of St Paul's Cathedral & now Chief Executive of the Sons of the Corporation of the Clergy will be our Guest Preacher at a special Eucharist at St Mary’s to celebrate the Feast of the Ascension. This is a service for ALL in our parish and we really hope everyone will make an effort to turn up and support Bishop Graeme's visit. Followed by a glass of "something nice" and finger food and HOPEFULLY the summer weather will be here. Please make a note now!! Please note that there will not be a 1230 celebration at St Bart's that Thursday (lunch and Forum will be as usual) but there will be an extra lunchtime celebration on Tuesday 14th May for St Matthias at St Bart's at 1230.
Working with children and teenagers In some of the early conversations I have had with churchwardens and other PCC members one of the recurring themes which come up time and again is - "what are we going to do for the children? what about the teenagers?" And they are right of course. The clergy team will be having an initial discussion on this next week. We have a new Curate coming too who will add some vigour and resourcefulness to this area. But our ministry to young people and the church of the future is ALL of our responsibilities and we will be concentrating on this as the summer approaches. If you have any thoughts - do please let us know. Rob
The Rectory The Archdeacon of West Ham has been in touch with Rob this week to say that the Rectory should be vacated this week and it will then take up to 4 weeks to get the place ship shape and ready for Rob to move in. We will keep you posted. During May Rob will do what he can but the accommodation he has had in E6 temporarily has to be vacated early in May so it is going to be a tricky tramline to navigate. Prayers for this please.
Parish Outing Our 2013 parish outing is to Chichester on Saturday 29th June. Please note the date on your calendar.
We will be taking names next month!
Me & My Music Bart's Cafe will be the venue for an evening of fun, food and music on Wednesday 5th June at 7.30pm for all in the parish when we invite a special guest to pick their six favourite pieces of music over a simple supper. Our first special guest will be The Revd Nicola Vidamour, our Methodist Minister, whom we all know well. This should be a fun evening. Book the date now! We hope to welcome some of our Methodist sisters and brothers too!!
