LENT 2014 – Journeying Along With Christ
“Growing up as an evangelical Christian, I experienced Lent as little more than a joke. “What are you giving up for Lent?” my friends would ask. “Homework,” I’d say with a smirk, or “Obeying my parents.” Lent was one of those peculiar practices demanded of Roman Catholics – another great reason to be Protestant, I figured. ” (Revd Dr Mark D Roberts)
Does the above sound like your own secretly held conception of Lent too ? At least sometimes?. How can we turn things round so that Lent becomes a more positive and spiritually enriching experience? Lent, a season to increase our faith and improve our relationship with God? Lent, a time to: “turn away from evil and be faithful to Christ” Lent, a time to grow more deeply in God’s grace.
Firstly Lenten Fasting and abstinence need to be undertaken consciously as a spiritual exercise designed for personal and corporate spiritual gains.
Through Lenten fasting and by giving up something we could allow ourselves to make tangible sacrifices to the Lord. By giving up some of our worldly props and ‘indulgements’ – drinking, excessive eating, smoking, sweets etc ……we become more dependent on the Lord. By giving up something we are reminded of our neediness. This neediness paradoxically creates new freedom, freedom from the “idols” of the world, freedom to re-align ourselves with God, a God who is both incarnately present and immanent, but at the same time Holy and transcendent. This is the neediness which engenders and nurtures true spirituality. Jesus says:
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. . . .
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.” Matthew 5:3, 6
We might add a Lenten Discipline to our fasting. This could be a Lenten Bible study, more time for prayer, reflection and meditation, Pilgrimages, or acts of kindness, such as feeding the homeless, visiting the sick , giving and making donations for charity etc. The list for personalized acts of Lenten discipline is infinite……….just as God’s amazing grace is infinite. Pilgrimage to Bradwell Pauline Ellis from St Paul's and myself are eager to experience the Bradwell Pilgrimage again this year. Saturday 12th July. http://bradwellpilgrimage.webs.com/ In the distant past, a couple of coaches went from Newham every year and joined up with hundreds of others from various denominations across Essex and East London. We thought we'd experiment this year by trying to fill a coach from the churches in East Ham.It seems the likely cost will be around £10. Please let me know if you are interested or want more info. And watch out for more publicity at St Bart’s. Shirley Biro
