2nd SUNDAY OF ADVENT

A TRAGIC DEATH

I never knew him. I watched him play cricket for my beloved Middlesex and also for Australia against England.

So in some way I felt I had a connection with Philip Hughes,

the Australian Batsmen who died recently. His death affected me.

He had a wonderful yet unorthodox style as a batsman.

A batsman who made you sit up and take notice. He died after receiving a bouncer from a fellow Australian fast bowler. Misjudging the delivery he got caught with the ball hitting between his head and his neck. It was as it turned out to be a fatal blow. Cricket on the whole has had mercifully few tragic events like this, even playing the game with a very hard ball that can be flying around at near 100 mph.

The death of any person in the public eye affects us even though we may never have met them. I remember the day of Princess Diana’s funeral in East Ham. The roads were empty, flowers collected around the church. Everyone was is mourning for someone that we all thought we knew through her public image.

Sportspeople, Royalty or even Politicians those who fill the column inches of our newspapers will always be mourned. Yet it is also worth remembering as we remember their lives. Prayers should also be said for the unknown casualties of wars and disease whose deaths often go unreported and can be easily forgotten.

Sunday 30th November 2014

ADVENT SUNDAY

Ready, Steady, Go!

Today is the first Sunday in Advent and tomorrow is Cyber Monday – the day when the world spends most money

on internet shopping!

         Both are part of getting ready for Christmas and both are important to us in our preparation for Christ’s coming. Of course we want to give cards and presents to our loved ones;

we do so want to echo God’s generosity and show family and friends that we care for them and think about them, even if we’re far apart.

But, at the same time, we know that we need to have

a bit of a tidy round of the spiritual stable of our souls.

We go to church and hear the Good News – but then soon forget the profound thoughts we shared; we say sorry for our sins and receive God’s forgiveness – but still cherish a little guilty thought that we think God doesn’t know about; we celebrate being part of Christ’s body – but then neglect our own bodies….and so on.

So, what to do? There will be short times of reflection

at each of the Parish Masses during Advent – Wednesdays at

St Edmund’s at 10am and at St Mary Magdalene’s at 6.30pm, and Thursdays at St Bartholomew’s at 12.30, so why not join us for one of those? And there are some lovely concerts happening locally, some with free entry. Why not sit quietly and let the music soothe your soul?

Advent’s the time when God says –

‘Coming, ready or not!’

Best get ready.                                              Ann

PARISH NEWS

Sunday 23rd November 2014

Christ the King

FEAST OF CHRIST THE KING

The Feast of Christ the King , is formally entitled “The Solemnity of Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe” . It is a relatively recent feast in the Christian Liturgical Calendar  instituted by Pope Pius XI in 1925. In the midst of, and in response to the growing nationalism and secularism throughout the world, the feast was to accentuate and articulate the poignant message of the Christian position:

Christ conquers! Christ rules! Christ reigns!

(Christus vincit! Christus regnat! Christus imperat!)

In the teleological conception of time in God’s History, where divine timelessness enables the unity of the Beginning and the End, The Alpha and the Omega, the feast celebrates already, the accomplishment of the salvific work of Christ, which brings all nations and all creation saved, and back in union with God the Creator.

And at the end of time (the eschaton),

"When the Son of Man comes in his glory, escorted by all the angels of heaven, he will sit upon his royal throne, and all the nations

will be assembled before him." (Mt 25)

Jesus the anointed Christ, is Lord and King because he is victorious in the battle over sin and death. As heirs in faith we appropriate this victory which Jesus won for all of us on His self-emptying sacrifice of the Calvary Cross each time we pray:

"Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven."

Indeed, Our God reigns!

May Christ the Universal King continue to reign in our hearts, in our lives, in our families, over  our city of London, over our Nation and all nations, in all religions and cultures, over the whole world and in all creation. Amen.                                                      Fr Fred

St Edmund's Quiet Confidence

It is highly appropriate that we begin the next stage of the journey of St Edmund's joining the East Ham Team this morning on a Sunday close to the Patronal Festival which commemorates the life of St Edmund himself.

There are many characterstics of St Edmund which are relevant to the missionary task facing each of our churches and the whole team in the current context in which God has called us.

But reading his life again - over the course of the last week

- it is a quiet confidence in the strength of the love of God

which shines out, above all, in the life and death of St Edmund.

He faced terrible violence and suffering: the Gospel was constantly under threat; the people did not understand.

But despite everything, and even as his terrible execution approached, St Edmund remained steadfast: in prayer, in faith and in hope.

Indeed, studying St Edmund's life this week I was reminded of Bishop Michael Ramsey's sentence in his wonderful book,

Be Still and Know:

"It is in Christ like and in the sacrificial that reality is to be found".

My prayer is that we will remain Christ-like and be prepared to sacrifice those bits of ourselves which hold the Gospel back

- as we show our community that quiet confidence which Jesus brings.

PARISH NEWS

Sunday 9th November 2014

Remembrance Sunday

The past is a foreign country....

2014 is, of course, the centenary of the start of the First World War and my bookshelves (well, my Kindle) is groaning under the weight of books on the subject. What strikes me is that 1914 was a different age. Concepts which today seem old-fashioned, even suspect, – honour, duty, sacrifice, patriotism, King and Country, were very real to those who volunteered to fight for what they  believed was a just and worthwhile cause, even if its horrors were not fully realised. A far cry from the “me” and “my rights”generation of today.

But what is today's Christian response to those events?  I don't know. We now look at those who refused to fight, the conscientious objectors, with sympathy, not vilification, and we agonise over the rights and wrongs of present-day conflicts. No-one doubts the bravery and sacrifice of those involved and, on this day in particular, we honour and remember them. I have particular reason to be grateful to those of the Second World War as my parents came to the UK as refugees in 1938 and, had we been invaded, my father would have been sent to the concentration camps. The First War seems a little different, indeed my mother's father (my grandfather) was killed in that war but he was in the Austro-Hungarian army fighting our allies in Italy.

I have come to believe that the First War was just, and possibly inevitable but this debatable. What is clear is that those who fought it, at least at the beginning, believed in what they were doing and I respect that and honour it.

                                                                                                                                                       ….....they do things differently there.

Remembrance Sunday

Today we remember all those who paid the ultimate sacrifice in the giving of their lives in the cause of peace.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning

We will remember them.

At St Mary’s there will be a shortened special service so we can make our remembrance at 11am at the war memorial in the churchyard.

Bethany Group. Around 7 of us from the Parish and Café met this week to agree how future sessions should operate in order to be open and welcoming to anyone who wants to join us.  Either as a regular or to drop in. We decided that the following principles are important.  We are NOT Counsellors.

Just a group to listen, care and share with each other.  We have information on other professional services for those who need it.

Everything shared is In Confidence and there is no pressure to share if you don’t wish to. We will aim to run on the first Monday of the Month in the Luke Room. (Next Session, December 1st ) Start with refreshments at 1.45pm, then start at 2pm with a quiet reflection around a candle before the time for sharing. At the end we will go into the Chapel for an optional short period of prayer.  If you want a prayer said for you at this time but cannot be there then please send to me. Everyone welcome. If you know of anyone who would like to join us, Christian or not, then please invite them.   Shirley Biro
