PARISH NEWS

Sunday 20th February 2011

  Channels of God’s Peace

In our Scripture Readings of the last couple of weeks the call to us towards perfection. What an ominous time for such a reminder! Think about Egypt and the rest of the Arab World. Think about the Middle East. Think of our own church splitting instead of building bridges. The hope is that YOU can be the missing strong link that keeps God’s Peace and harmony going. So was St Francis. We may want to make his Prayer our own:

The prayer of St. Francis

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace,
where there is hatred, let me sow love;
where there is injury, pardon;
where there is doubt, faith;
where there is despair, hope;
where there is darkness, light;
where there is sadness, joy;

O Divine Master,

grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
to be understood as to understand;
to be loved as to love.

For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

                                                                                                                                                           Fr Fred

Our annual meeting will take place on Sunday 6th March, following a joint service at St Bart’s.

As usual, we will be electing churchwardens, and members of the parish and district councils –

and this year we will also be electing three representatives

from the parish to Newham Deanery Synod.

If you would like to be involved in the life of our churches in any of these ways, please make sure your name is added

(with a proposer and seconder)

to the sheets at the back of our churches.

If you are interested, but not sure what is involved,

do speak to one of the clergy or current wardens.

BISHOP STEPHEN IN NEWHAM.

Our new bishop of Chelmsford, Bishop Stephen Cottrell, will be visiting Newham on Friday 11 March.

He will be spending some time in St Bart’sin the morning, meeting clergy from the deanery.

In the evening there will be a service at 7.30pm at St John’s, Stratford, followed by social time and refreshments: this is an event to which everyone in the deanery is invited, and it would be good to see as many people as possible there to greet Bishop Stephen.
